How to Transfer Your Entire Firefox Profile to a New Computer

Transfer Firefox Profile To A New Computer

Need to transfer Firefox to a new computer, along with your bookmarks, passwords, extensions, history and settings? This tutorial will show you how.

There are two primary ways to move a Firefox profile to another computer – manual copy and automatic transfer. We will cover both in this guide, although if you prefer to just skip to the easier, automatic option, you can click here for automatic transfer of your Firefox profile from one computer to another.

Manual copy of your Firefox profile

Unlike some browsers, Firefox keeps everything – including saved passwords – inside its profile folder, so a manual copy is possible:

  1. Close Firefox on your old computer.
  2. Open this folder:
    C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
  3. Copy the profile folder (it looks like “xxxxxxxx.default-release”) to a USB drive or external drive.
  4. On the new computer, install Firefox and launch it once, then close it.
  5. Type about:profiles in the Firefox address bar, create a new profile, and point it at a folder – then copy the contents of your old profile folder into it (or copy over the new profile folder’s contents entirely).
  6. Start Firefox with that profile – your bookmarks, passwords and history should be there.

Doable? Yes. Easy? Not exactly – one wrong step with profiles.ini or the folder names, and Firefox starts empty. And this only moves Firefox: everything else on the computer still needs a separate plan.

Automatic Transfer of Your Firefox Profile to a New Computer

The easiest way to transfer Firefox from one computer to another is to use a dedicated transfer tool – Zinstall WinWin. No hidden folders, no profiles.ini editing.

It can transfer not just your Firefox profile, but all other apps you have as well, along with your profiles, accounts, personalization, and all files from your old computer – automatically.

How to transfer your Firefox profile to a new computer

  1. Run Zinstall WinWin on your current computer (the one you are transferring from).
Note: You can get Zinstall WinWin here.
  2. Run Zinstall WinWin on the new computer
    1. You don’t need to do any configurations for the computers to connect – it’s automatic
    2. If the computers are already connect to same router, same Internet connection, or same wireless connection, you don’t need anything else
    3. If the computers are not connected at all, connect them with a network / Ethernet cable
  3. If you’d like to select which applications and files you want to transfer, press the Advanced menu. If you just want to transfer everything, you don’t need to go to the Advanced menu.
  4. Press “Go” on the Windows 11 or Windows 10 computer to start the transfer

That’s it!

Once the transfer is done, Firefox will be all set on the new computer, with your bookmarks, passwords, extensions and history – just like on the old computer.

The new computer will feel just like home.
