How to Upgrade Windows Server 2019 to Server 2025 – In-Place or Migration

Upgrade Server 2019 to Server 2025

Moving from Windows Server 2019 to Server 2025? There are two ways to get there: upgrade the existing server in place, or migrate to a fresh 2025 installation. Here is how to choose – and how to do each.

Option 1: In-place upgrade

  1. Check application compatibility for every workload on the server, and take a full backup / snapshot.
  2. Run the Server 2025 setup from within Server 2019 and choose to keep files, settings and apps (Microsoft supports this path from 2019).
  3. Verify every role and application afterwards.

The in-place upgrade is convenient – but it carries everything forward, including the old installation’s accumulated problems, and if it fails mid-way, the production server is what’s down. For servers that have been running for years, that risk is real.

Option 2: Migrate to a fresh Server 2025 (recommended)

Stand up a clean Server 2025 machine (hardware or VM), then migrate the environment onto it with Zinstall WinServ:

  1. Run Zinstall WinServ on the old server (2019).
  2. Run Zinstall WinServ on the new server (2025) – the servers connect over the network automatically.
  3. Select what to transfer in the Advanced menu (or just press “Go” for everything): applications, databases, settings, shares, permissions and data are migrated – no reinstalls.

After the migration

  • Adjust DNS entries, login scripts and GPO policies that reference the old server.
  • Launch every application and console you use, and verify they load correctly.
  • From a client workstation, verify clients can access the migrated server and their applications run without issues.

Congratulations! Your 2019 to 2025 upgrade is now complete.
