How to transfer WordPerfect to a new computer

Transfer Google Chrome From One Computer To Another

Here’s a common scenario – you replaced your old computer with a new one and now you want to continue where you left off with your WordPerfect projects. However, you will encounter a common problem – how to quickly migrate WordPerfect to your new computer, along with everything else you need to continue your work.

This includes all your WordPerfect documents, projects, personal settings, tools, default and custom macros, user word lists, address books, toolbars, keyboard definitions, menus, property bars, templates, graphic and outline styles, QuickCorrects, and QuickWords.

There are two ways to transfer all of this data. You can take the longer, manual method or the faster, less complicated one using automatic software.

We will cover both in this guide, although if you prefer to just skip to the easier, automatic option, you can click here for automatic transfer of WordPerfect from one computer to another.

Manual transfer of the WordPerfect to a new computer

This section will present a list of steps for manual migration of the WordPerfect suite to another device. If you’d rather just skip this and just go for the automatic option now, just click here to see how it’s done.

To manually transfer your WordPerfect with all of the relevant files from one computer to another, you’ll first need to ensure you have an external drive or cloud storage with enough storage space. Then, you’ll need to closely follow these steps (of course, only if you don’t want to use the automated transfer option):

  • Install your WordPerfect product on the new computer.
  • Make sure you have the same versions of WordPerfect on both computers.
  • Ensure all of your files and folders are visible on both of your computers:
    • Open ‘This PC’ in File Explorer.
    • Click ‘File’ -> ‘Change folder and search options’ to open the ‘Folder Options’ dialog box. In the ‘Folder Options’ dialog box, check ‘Show hidden files and folders’.
    • Uncheck ‘Hide extensions for known file types’.
    • Uncheck ‘Hide protected operating and system files (Recommended)’.
  • On your old computer, find all the relevant WordPerfect files and folders, including:
    • user’s default template file (e.g. for WordPerfect Office 12, this file is called WP12US.WPT),
    • custom templates (with the .wpt extension),
    • QuickWord and QuickCorrect files (e.g. QW12EN.WPT and WT12US.UWL),
    • user word list files that might be stored in an ‘unexpected’ location, such as in the ‘WritingTools’ folder,
    • your .MOR file, if you have added words to the Main Word List (e.g. WT12US.MOR),
    • default personal macros folder and custom macro files (with the .wcm extension),
    • your catalog of project files in the file Projects.Usr,
    • your personal documents (with the .wpd extension),
    • the ‘CCWin’ folder in your ‘Documents’ (this is also where you’ll find your WordPerfect address book files).
  • Memorize which files were in which location. This way you’ll know where to copy them on the new computer and reduce the risk of errors and missing files.
  • Plug in the external drive or open the cloud storage on your old computer.
  • Copy all of the relevant WordPerfect files to your storage.
  • On your new computer, find the locations for all the elements listed above.
  • Plug in the external drive or open the cloud storage on your new computer.
  • Copy the elements from the storage into their proper folders that were created with the installation of WordPerfect on the new PC.
  • After you’re done, make sure to run WordPerfect on your new PC for a while to make sure the transfer process was successful.

Your WordPerfect and all the files you require should now finally be transferred to your new computer – provided that nothing went wrong during the process. If it did, then you’ll need to start all over again.

This manual method has the advantage of being completely free. However, it will take you quite a lot of time and effort to migrate everything properly. It will also require a lot of space on your external drive or cloud storage, which might not be available at all times.

Thankfully, there’s a better way to do all this – see below.

How to transfer WordPerfect to a New Computer – Automatically

Instead of having to dedicate your entire afternoon and resources to the lengthy and painstaking process of manual migration of WordPerfect, there’s a better option –  Zinstall WinWin. It is automatic, and does not require any of the manual steps above.

Here’s what you’ll need to do:

  1. Download and run Zinstall WinWin on your current computer (the one you are transferring WordPerfect from).
Note: You can get Zinstall WinWin here.
  2. Download and run Zinstall WinWin on the new computer
    1. You don’t need to do any configurations for the computers to connect – it’s automatic
    2. If the computers are already connect to same router, same Internet connection, or same wireless connection, you don’t need anything else
    3. If the computers are not connected at all, connect them with a network / Ethernet cable
  3. If you’d like to select which applications and files you want to transfer, press the Advanced menu. If you just want to transfer everything, you don’t need to go to the Advanced menu.
  4. Press “Go” on the new computer to start the transfer

That’s it!

And just like that, all of your WordPerfect data, including documents, projects, personal settings, tools, macros, user word lists, address books, fonts, toolbars, keyboard definitions, menus, property bars, templates, graphic and outline styles, word lists, QuickCorrects, QuickWords, and other customizations have been moved without any effort on your side.

However, it doesn’t stop there. Zinstall WinWin can also migrate just about everything else from your old computer to the new one. This includes all the other apps, settings, customizations, profiles, registry entries, emails – anything. The program works on all contemporary Windows versions, including XP, Vista, 7,  8/8.1, Windows 10 and Windows 11.
