How to Transfer Everything to a New Computer If You Only Have One Monitor
Transferring to a new computer – but you only have one monitor, one keyboard and one mouse for both machines? That’s the normal situation for most desktop owners, and it is not a problem. Here are two ways to do the whole transfer without buying a second screen.
Option 1: transfer over the network – switching the screen mid-way
This is the standard Zinstall WinWin transfer, with one twist: the old computer keeps working without a screen once its part is running.
- Make sure both computers are connected to the same network (same router / same Internet connection – or connect them directly with an Ethernet cable).
- With the monitor, keyboard and mouse on the old computer: run Zinstall WinWin on it, and leave it running.
Note: You can get Zinstall WinWin here. - Now switch your monitor, keyboard and mouse over to the new computer. The old computer keeps running headless – WinWin stays active on it.
- Run Zinstall WinWin on the new computer. The two computers find each other automatically.
- If you’d like to select which applications and files to transfer, press the Advanced menu. If you just want to transfer everything, you don’t need to.
- Press “Go” on the new computer to start the transfer.
That’s it! The whole transfer is driven from the new computer – the old one just needs to stay powered on until it finishes.
Option 2: transfer with an external USB drive
If you’d rather not have both machines on at once, use Zinstall Migration Kit Pro with an external drive – the same approach as in transferring with a USB drive:
- With the screen on the old computer: run Migration Kit Pro and capture the computer into a container file on an external USB drive.
- Move the screen, keyboard, mouse – and the drive – to the new computer.
- Run Migration Kit Pro on the new computer and restore from the container: programs, settings, profiles and all files arrive automatically.
Either way, the new computer will feel just like home.
