How to Transfer Programs to a New Computer for Free (and What Free Methods Can’t Do)

Transfer programs to a new computer for free

Looking to transfer your programs to a new computer without paying for anything? Let’s be upfront about what free methods can and cannot do – so you don’t spend a weekend discovering it the hard way.

The free methods – and what they actually move

  • USB drive / external drive: moves files. Free, reliable – files only.
  • Cloud storage (OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox): moves files, syncs them nicely – files only.
  • Windows Backup / Microsoft account sign-in: brings some settings, Store apps and OneDrive files to the new PC. Your desktop programs are shown as pins that reinstall from the Store if available – classic installed software does not come over.
  • Nearby Sharing / network share: moves files between two PCs – files only.

Notice the pattern? No free method moves the programs themselves. Installed software is woven into Windows – its components, settings and licensing can’t travel as simple files. The free way to “move” programs is to reinstall every one of them by hand: find the installers, find the license keys, reconfigure everything.

If your time is worth something

If you have more than a couple of programs (or you’re missing an installer or a license key), a dedicated transfer tool pays for itself in the first hour: Zinstall WinWin transfers the installed programs – with their settings and licenses – along with your profiles, accounts and all files, automatically.

How to transfer your programs to the new computer

  1. Run Zinstall WinWin on your current computer (the one you are transferring from).
Note: You can get Zinstall WinWin here.
  2. Run Zinstall WinWin on the new computer
    1. You don’t need to do any configurations for the computers to connect – it’s automatic
    2. If the computers are already connect to same router, same Internet connection, or same wireless connection, you don’t need anything else
    3. If the computers are not connected at all, connect them with a network / Ethernet cable
  3. If you’d like to select which applications and files you want to transfer, press the Advanced menu. If you just want to transfer everything, you don’t need to go to the Advanced menu.
  4. Press “Go” on the Windows 11 or Windows 10 computer to start the transfer

That’s it!

Use the free methods for your files – they’re genuinely good at that. For everything else that makes your computer yours, this is the way that works.
