Transfer to a new Lenovo: Lenovo Migration Assistant and other options

Transfer Google Chrome From One Computer To Another

So you’ve purchased a new Lenovo computer and you want to have all your documents, settings, and apps transferred from your old PC. There are some solid options out there, allowing you to migrate to your new Lenovo ThinkPad, Lenovo Yoga, Lenovo IdeaPad, ThinkBook, Legion, Lenovo Gaming and so on.

One of these options is the manufacturer’s own migration tool called Lenovo Migration Assistant. It was designed to transfer common files and settings from any Windows 7 (or higher) computer to a Lenovo computer. It does not officially support Windows 11, although there are reports from customers that were able to use it on some Windows 11 computers (note that there is another, automated PC transfer software that fully supports Windows 11 – see below).

Lenovo Migration Assistant does not transfer your applications, accounts, profiles, Outlook, Office, Tax Software, emails, or even user files outside of the standard user profile folders.

Luckily, there’s also a method that migrates all of the above – basically your entire computer – automatically (and even faster). It fully supports Windows 11, too, including transfers from an old Window 10 computer to a new Windows 11 Lenovo.

How to transfer data using Lenovo Migration Assistant

Lenovo Migration Assistant is Lenovo software package that you to migrate your personal files to your Lenovo computer (Windows 10). Migration is possible from any other computer running Windows 7 or newer, up to Windows 10.

This tool transfers common user files, such as Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos, Downloads, as well as some user settings.

That said, it doesn’t transfer everything. You do not get your applications, your accounts, Outlook, Office, your apps etc. It doesn’t even migrate user files that are not part of standard user profile folders.

On top of that, the process involves quite a few steps that you’ll need to carry out.

Fortunately, there’s a tool that will transfer your entire old computer, with everything on it, including programs, accounts, and settings. It requires no technical knowledge, either. To learn how to use this tool now,  click here.

If you still want to try Lenovo Migration Assistant, here are the steps you’ll need to follow:

  • Launch Lenovo Vantage, and go to the User menu (top right corner).
  • Select “Lenovo Migration Assistant”.
  • Click “Install”, and when done – click “Launch”.
  • On your old computer, go to migration.lenovo.com
  • Download Lenovo Migration Assistant on the old computer as well, and launch it.
  • Make sure both computers are connected to AC power, and to same wireless network.
  • In Lenovo Migration Assistant, select “Wi-Fi” on both computers.
  • Designate which computer is the old one, and which is the new one.
  • Lenovo Migration Assistant on the old computer will show you a PIN, which you should enter on the new computer.
  • If the computers are unable to connect, check if you have a firewall on the old computer blocking the connection.
  • Once connected, you will be offered a list of files and Windows settings.
    • Note: if the connection fails, you’ll need to log into your Lenovo ID on both computers
  • Mark the files and folders that you would like to transfer.
  • Start the transfer.
  • Your data will now migrate and you can view a brief summary of how the operation went, and if everything is OK. Click Finish to complete the process.

Phew. Your new Lenovo device now finally has the user files and settings you selected for the transfer. But you are far from done. Now – you need to reinstall all the apps you need, move all the files that Lenovo Migration Assistant couldn’t, reconfigure everything, and recreate your accounts.

Or, you could use a transfer software that transfers all files automatically, as well as everything else – really making your new Lenovo feel like home. Like this:

How to transfer to a new Lenovo – Automatically

A much simpler approach involves using dedicated transfer software, that automatically copies applications, profiles, settings, personalization, and all files, to your new Lenovo – Zinstall WinWin.

It supports Windows 11, as well (including transfer from an old Windows 10 computer, to a new Windows 11 Lenovo).

Here’s how:

  1. Download and run Zinstall WinWin on your current computer (the one you are transferring to the new Lenovo from).
Note: You can get Zinstall WinWin here.
  2. Download and run Zinstall WinWin on the new computer
    1. You don’t need to do any configurations for the computers to connect – it’s automatic
    2. If the computers are already connect to same router, same Internet connection, or same wireless connection, you don’t need anything else
    3. If the computers are not connected at all, connect them with a network / Ethernet cable
  3. If you’d like to select which applications and files you want to transfer, press the Advanced menu. If you just want to transfer everything, you don’t need to go to the Advanced menu.
  4. Press “Go” on the new computer to start the transfer

And that’s all there is! You have successfully transferred all of your files and programs to your new Lenovo – documents, images, music, user settings, profiles, applications, accounts, Outlook, Office, plugins, registry entries, as well as any user files that are not part of standard user profile folders.

All of them are right where you wanted them – on your new Lenovo computer so you can continue where you left off.
