How to Upgrade Windows 11 to Windows 12 – Without Losing Programs and Files
Moving from Windows 11 to Windows 12? Whether you upgrade your current PC or get a new computer with Windows 12 on it, the goal is the same: end up with all of your programs, settings, accounts and files exactly as they were. Here is how to make sure of it.
Before anything: back up
Every major Windows upgrade carries the same risk – a failure halfway through, or an upgrade path that quietly keeps less than you expected. Make a complete backup of the computer to an external drive before you start.
Upgrading the same PC
- Check eligibility – as with every new Windows version, Windows 12 has its own hardware requirements, and some Windows 11 machines will not qualify.
- If Microsoft offers an in-place upgrade with “Keep personal files and apps”, that is the path of least resistance – with your backup as the safety net.
